CTE- Vocational Nursing Program
Sharlotte says, "I enjoy the material that is being taught during lectures and demonstrations in class and applying the skills in the skills lab. My overall goal after completing this Nursing Program is to pass the NCLEX exam, obtain my Nursing License and work as a Nurse so that I can contribute in a meaningful way to society. Ratana Sok
GED Program
Ratana says, "I started my first year of VAS with the ESL program. My ESL teacher introduced me to the GED program. I'm currently studying for my GED. I have enjoyed the class and the online software, it really helps a lot when I self study. It is easy to understand, gives a lot of details about the lesson and encourages me to study more. I am now halfway finished to get my GED. A challenge for me sometimes is the language barrier while studying but to overcome this I never give up. If I happen to fail or be too slow I can always start over. I can say that my family, teachers and friends have had the biggest impact in my life and shaping who I am. After I get my GED I want to continue school and start studying the business program. I think VAS is the best place for adult students who want to continue their education and no matter your age it is always the right time to go back and get your education."
Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
Ratana has worked her way through ESL, ABE and now HSE/GED all while working full time. She passed her first two GED tests, and she is well on her way to passing her third test. Congratulations on all your hard work Ratana!

Martin Velasco Ruiz
GED Program
Martin says, "I discovered this program shortly after receiving an opportunity for a promotion at work. I needed the GED to qualify for the promotion, so I visited the VAS website and enrolled. I enjoy that the course is at your own pace and, when I finally feel ready, I can take the exam. My mother has made the greatest impact on my life. She has lived a difficult life but has never given up and always grabbed life by the horns, even to this day. Some things I always try to practice, especially when meeting new people, are honesty and respect. As cheesy as it sounds, it's never too late to do the things you have always wanted to do. If you're thinking about doing it, give it a shot. ¡Si se puede!"

Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
"Martin regularly logged in hours on Aztec each week since he enrolled on August 12th. Between then and right before Christmas, he passed all four of his GED Subject Area Tests in order to earn his GED certificate. During this time, he was also studying for his Citizenship test and passed all of his requirements to become a U.S. Citizen. Martin has done all of this while still working a full-time job, and it is because of his persistence and hard work that he was nominated for January Award."

Sandra R. Serrano
High School Diploma Program
Sandra says, "I have been attending VAS off and on for as long as I could remember. I love that I have been able to come back and start each time where I've left off with no problems at all and of course I love the non-stop encouragement from the staff at VAS, especially my teacher Diane. She has pushed me when I didn't want to be pushed, and never gave up on me and for that I am grateful. My goal is to complete my HS diploma and sign up for COS.
My biggest motivators would definitely be my husband and children that have stuck by me when I have repeatedly thrown in the towel, and trust me- it's been a lot of towels. Even when I gave up on myself they remind me of why I need to push forward. To anyone struggling to finish its never to late, no matter your situation you could strive to reach your goals. When you strive for what you want, you can accomplish anything."

Congratulatory Message & Shout out!
Sandra is the epitome of a C.S. Lewis quote, “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” A young mother at 14, often seeking a place to live, she and her husband have persevered, have several children ranging in age from 12 to 25, and have been married for 25 years. Together, they make education the most important thing for their kids. Sandra says she would not change a thing and adds, “all of this has made me who I am today. Change starts with me.

Bianca Melissa Ramos Banuelos
English as a Second Language
"Hello, my name is Bianca Ramos, originally from Nayarit, Mexico, and I am enrolled in Visalia Adult School in the English as a Second Language program. Seeing the need I had to communicate, my parents told me about the school, so I took the best of the decisions, and enrolled in Visalia Adult School. What I enjoy the most about this program is being nourished by knowledge in the English language and not only speaking it, but knowing its culture within the classes, since coming from Mexico and not knowing how to speak English is a very big barrier. BIG. My goal after completing the program would be to find a job opportunity where I feel fulfilled as a woman.
My spirit animal is the wolf because wolves symbolize resistance and physical endurance, it has a great sense of family and unity, the wolf helps to find the balance between responsibilities and our own personal identity. The people who have had the greatest impact on me are: my daughter, my parents, my husband and especially Visalia Adult School, which for me is represented by my teacher Judy Moxley. My values are love, gratitude, humility and responsibility. Something that I could say to people who are reading about me is that, if you still cannot speak English, do not miss this opportunity that Visalia Adult School is offering us, no matter how old you are, it's never too late to start having a dialogue in the English language."

Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
Last November, Bianca informed me it was going to be necessary for her to travel for a few months. She pleaded with me to keep her in the class and pledged to continue as a DL student meeting regularly for class. We made an agreement that as long as she continued to get on ZOOM and participate in Burlington English, I would keep her in the class. This student has faithfully kept her pledge from Texas and Mexico. She rarely missed a class, only when relocating on class day or being ill. She has since returned to Visalia and has informed me that she just passed her citizenship exam! She has improved her English dramatically from when she started school with us. Her diligence to continue faithfully as a student at home or on the road is quite commendable!!

Thi Bich Xuan Tran Qualls
Citizenship & English as a Second Language
My name is Thi Bich Xuan Tran Qualls. I came to the United States on September 1st, 2017 from Vietnam. My husband lives with me in Visalia. I have been studying the Advanced ESL English in Teacher Sarah Motola's class. In 2019, I studied Child Care and Caregiver courses in Teacher Mona Peracca's class and I received certifications of completion. Also, I studied the computer typing in Teacher Brian Brinkman's class. Finally, I studied the mathematics in Teacher Alison Wahlen’s class. In 2021, I studied the citizenship in Teacher Cary Kalfayan's class.
I found out about Visalia Adult School through my husband. I enjoyed most the Advanced ESL English and the citizenship classes. The teachers have helped me to become confident and better in English. It helped me to pass the citizenship interview on March 2nd, 2022 and I received the United States citizen certificate on the same day.
My goal after I complete my program here at Visalia Adult School is to become a first-grade teacher. I consider my spirit like an eagle. Because I shall mount up with wings like an eagle. I shall run and not be weary; I shall walk and not faint. My husbands, Teacher Sarah and Teacher Cary have had the greatest impact on shaping in my life and who I am today. Teacher Sarah and teacher Cary kept pushing me to study very hard. I’m really thankful for them. Loving and caring for people, responsibility, humility, and gratitude are my values. Visalia Adult School is a kind and friendly place where you will receive a good quality education.
Visalia Adult School will help you learn as well as enjoy learning while you’re studying. The teachers really care about their students and expect them to become successful. It doesn't matter about your social, economic, age or ability to speak English when you come to Visalia Adult School. The teachers here will provide you the four necessary language skills in English: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It makes for a good quality language education, and you will have fun doing it. In addition, the staff and students are very friendly to everyone. We are just like a big happy family. You will make life long friends while attending Visalia Adult School. Just try one semester at Visalia Adult School you will not regret it.

Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
"Xuan Qualls represents everything a teacher could ever want in a student: commitment, focus, desire to learn, inquisitiveness, positive attitude, and an encouragement to others. She is well known and respected by many VAS teachers as she has taken classes in different programs over the last few years. In my Citizenship class, Xuan attended every chance she got because she made a real commitment to achieving her goal of becoming a citizen. Xuan exemplifies the expression "above and beyond" because she went further with her citizenship studies to ensure there would be no question she couldn't answer at the interview. On March 2, 2022 Xuan passed and was sworn in as a United States Citizen! All of Xuan's teachers had no doubt she would pass her interview. Congratulations, Xuan!"

Matthew Holloway

CTE, General Welding
I came to find the perfect welding class that would fit my work schedule here at Visalia Adult School. I mostly enjoy talking to the teacher because he is about my age and have the same likes out of class. I look to get into the sheet metal Union in Fresno Local 104 after the class is done. My spirit animal would be a Tiger because it shows strength and military prowess. I go about my day according to a schedule planned daily. My Grandpa has had the greatest impact on shaping who I am today. I believe in strength, persistence, and truth. A tip or suggestion I would tell students that are considering VAS is, I would tell the students to stay with it. It will be hard and frustrating at first but if you stay with it, it will be great once you get certified.

Angela Yu
English as a Second Language
I found this school on the internet. I enjoy studying at Visalia Adult School. After I study English here, I will find a job to earn money and take care of all aspects of my life. I like animals, especially dogs. Dogs are loyal and can understand human language best. For the study of English, Mona Peracca, is my teacher and makes me feel comfortable and not nervous. I like this school and my teacher Mona. I am a Christian and I believe in God. I believe that God loves me and will give me all the best, love is the root of everything. For those who want to learn English, coming her to study will make you love where you go to school. You will also love the teachers here. You will learn in a relaxed and comfortable environment. You will like learning English and your English will improve even more if you come here.

Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
Angela Yu has made huge gains recently. When she first started class her understanding of the English language was minimal. Since Christmas Break, her English comprehension has really skyrocketed! She speaks and understands so much more. Her reading has vastly improved as well. Her recent CASAS Benchmark scores reflected these gains, as she gained 29 points on her reading test and 28 points on her listening test. She diamonded out on a level A test and is on a B level test with a 28 point gain. Congratulations! I know she will continue to be successful as she pursues opening up a shop.

Rose Margarita Reyes

English as a Second Language
The ESL program at Visalia Adult School is excellent for learning English as second language it was recommended to me by my daughter in law. What I enjoyed the most about the program is the camaraderie in the class (we all help each other) and the excellent teacher.
My main objective is to speak English and get my GED, and to later take a medical assistant course and thus achieve my dream of working in the medical field. After completing my goals at the Adult School, I will find a good job, will continue educating myself, and will have the life I always dreamed of with my family. I consider my spirit animal to be the butterfly as it represents total change, courage and freedom. My family has the greatest impact in shaping who I am. They are my engine to improve myself and get ahead.
My values were the best inheritance that my parents could give me: to be an honest, responsible and persistent person. If you are thinking of continuing your studies, whatever they maybe, I recommend the Adult School. It is an excellent school with highly trained teachers to teach you and help you achieve your dreams and goals.
Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
"Rosa started this year in the intermediate level ESL class. In January, she transferred to the advanced class. Her CASAS scores went up 7 points in reading and 2 points in listening in the fall semester. In the spring semester, her CASAS scores went up 12 points in reading and 11 points in listening. That's an overall gain of 19 points in reading and 13 points in listening so far for the year -and we still have 1 more benchmark test! How did she achieve that?!
Rosa is consistent, she pays attention, and she has excellent attendance. She is focused as is reflected in the number of hours that she has put into Burlington English; she has over 150 hours in Burlington English this semester! That's the most in the whole ESL department!
Not only is she studying English, but in March she started Spanish GED. She is doing both classes now so she is putting in time in both Burlington English and Aztec. She will take her first GED exam in May.
It isn’t always easy to maintain good attendance, in class and/or putting in hours at home on the computer (on Burlington English and Aztec), when one works and has kids. Rosa, who has 3 children, decided in 2020 that she would work for a year, save money, then return to school without having to juggle work, too. She worked all last year from 7 am to 10 pm so that she could come to school this year and focus on her education without work getting in the way.
In addition to her focus and excellent attendance, Rosa helps other students in class and has a great attitude, too! She is determined to learn English and get her GED, and then wants to pursue the Medical Assisting program. Way to go Rosa!"

Celia Deleon
High School Equivalency
I have been a student at Visalia Adult School since November 2021. I have been wanting to get my GED for a while and I went online and enrolled in the program at Visalia Adult School. I'm currently taking GED classes with Mrs. Nikki Thompson. Mrs. Thompson has been a great support for me, she is a great teacher and has been making this program easier and fun. I enjoy the fact that our class is small so each of the students has a connection with each other. The teacher is amazing and makes it even more enjoyable. After I'm done with the GED program I'm going to continue going to school at College of the Sequoias to complete my general studies.
The person who has made the greatest impact on who I am today without hesitation is my daughter. She is the main reason I want to be great at what I do and I want to be a good example for her, and also I want her to be proud of my accomplishments.
For those who are thinking of attending of Visalia adult School "DO IT." They will help you every step of the way and beyond. I would like to give a special thanks to my teacher Mrs. Nikki Thompson. Nikki you are an amazing person!!!

Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
Celia is a hard worker and exceptional student. She has studied GED in both English and Spanish, has improved her skills in all areas. She passed 2 tests in April completing 3 of her 4 tests. Her positive and uplifting attitude is contagious. Great work Celia!

Sia Lee

High School Diploma
I decided to go back to get my high school diploma and found VAS to be one of the best ones to attend due to the reviews. They are organized and works with my schedule. The teacher (Ginger Allen) is always available for questions/concerns and she understands personal situations. I plan to attend college after this and hopefully get into a career in the medical field. I think that I am similar to a lone wolf because I've done everything alone my whole life.
The person who has the greatest impact on me is my wife because she motivates me to want to do better with my life. My values in life are my family, education and health. It is never too late to want to start somewhere and the staff at Visalia Adult School cares and will help you succeed.
Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
Intrinsic motivation really kicked in for Sia this year! He has completed 27 credits during this school year, and is down to his last four credits to graduate! He dug deep to find the time to work on his credits, despite working full time as a sushi chef. He is always positive and is a joy to work with. He seems to truly enjoy learning.

Maribel Castillo Iniguez
High School Equivalency
Hi there I’m MaribeI Iniguez. I enrolled to get my high school diploma. How I found this program was through CSET! What I enjoy most about this program is how much the instructor is involved in helping you get through certain courses that are tough. I mean come on let's admit it, we all need help from time to time.
My goal after I complete getting the high school diploma is to get into real estate. I'm leaning into wanting to attend college now. Life is never permanent, we change our minds as we go through it. Change is inevitable, growth is optional. I consider my spirit animal to be a lion. Thus the lion Serves as a good luck Symbol for manifesting Strength and confidence in my life.
The people that I would say have shaped who I am today? Would have to be my parents, they've always believed in me. My Teacher Diane Townsend, now she's a pusher if it wasn't for her pushing me to make time for myself and my goals. I don't think I would have finished this year. Last but not least, my family, my husband and my son are great at encouraging me to be at my best everyday. My values in life are to always be kind, respectful and to always believe in yourself. Tips I would give for people wanting to attend VAS? Never doubt yourself you can achieve anything you set your mind to. When you think you have failed, keep going, remember you're not a failure till you quit. VAS changed my life and it will change yours as well.

Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
Maribel has been in our program for many years. She has had to balance family, work, and school. This semester, her balancing efforts are finally in sync. She is investing as many as 40 or more hours every week and coming to class often to get the support she needs, especially for math.

Creative Center
I like the Creative Center because it has a lot of activities like acting, drawing, sculpting. My family helped me find this program. I enjoy drawing, acting and sculpting the most. I want to be a very talented artist. I would want my spirit animal to be a tiger shark because they are large and have stripes. My family, has shaped me to be responsible and get me through life. My values are to use art to express myself and to be helpful to everyone around me. My tips and suggestions are that the Creative Center is fun and has many activities to do and you learn skills to help you in life.
Student, Matthew McMurtry
Congratulatory Message & Shout Out!
Most of our students, at The Creative Center, have not been utilizing technology before COVID, but Matthew has demonstrated consistency in his attendance navigating zoom. He pursues increasing his artistic skills in a variety of mediums and approaches. His persistent discipline of practice married with his inquisitive, explorative perspective, is reflected in his soulful portraits and figurative works. Recently, he had pieces at The Gingsburg Gallery located at the Creative Center purchased from a private art collector in New York. Matthew is a benefit to the Performing Arts Department as well. He brings his positive enthusiasm, kindness, and disciplined work ethic to the plays. His shyness melts when he's on stage. The Creative Center is a good fit for bringing out his abilities and The Creative Center is a better place with him being a part of our family.

Roxane Maquilang
CTE, VN Program
I’m in the VN program and I heard about it from a former colleague at the hospital. Great instructors and classmates are fun to be around. I want to continue my career patch in Nursing and aiming for an RN degree after I complete the program here at Visalia Adult School. The animal spirit I would associate myself with is the Wolf. The wolf knows what it takes to survive, can work alone or in a pack, and is fiercely protective. The person that has inspired me to be the person I am today is my son, Jet. He always inspires me to succeed. What I value in life is hard work, honesty, and family. For anyone thinking about attending programs at Visalia Adult School, my message to you is: "Don’t be afraid to return to school, and always maintain a positive attitude."

I found Visalia Adult School through a friend and after investigating online. Despite the Covid 19 pandemic, I enjoyed being at VAS. My teacher, Mrs. Ginger Allen and the staff at VAS help each other.
I enjoyed that the program I was enrolled in had the option to be all online. One of my next goals is to continue my studies in International Business in Economics and Finance. I enjoy the path of learning.
If I were to decide on my spirit animal, I would select the tiger. They are fast runners, big cats, water-loving creatures and very intelligent. The people that have made the greatest impact in shaping who I am today are too many to mention; Thanks to my parents, grandparents, and family. My values are fundamentally instilled by my parents, grandparents, Karate-Do (which means Civility, Respect, Tolerance To Our Others and the Community). To any student that is thinking about attending Visalia Adult School: Go ahead with take the first step, go little by little, each human being goes through different situations. My advice is to fight for your dreams, goals, purposes, and understanding your own time, needs, if you fall one, two, three times, get up 7 times never stop pursuing your dreams. Keep learning the universe is infinite.

What I enjoy most about this program is that while I study, I keep learning from my classes/subjects. My goal after I complete my credits is to study to be a nurse assistant. My kids have give me the strength to always work hard for them, for me, and for a better life. My values are the things that my family taught me. I believe these are important in the way I live and work. Reyna Zavala
English as a Second Language
I am in the ESL (English Learners) program and I learned about it through a flyer that Goshen elementary school sent home with their students.
I like this program because it is close to where I live, is free and they help me learn English. I'm learning English to be able to help my daughter with her homework/school work.
Some advice I'd give to other students thinking about taking courses from the Visalia Adult school is to not give up. Any person who wish to achieve it, can do it. It does not matter your age, you can achieve it. Even with the smallest amount of time we have to study that will be enough to make it.
Student, Reyna Zavala

Congratulatory Message
Reyna is a beginning student in the Goshen ESL program. I believe she only recently arrived in the US. She impresses me with her driven determination and commitment to be a good student and blesses me with her sweet disposition. Last week when I saw her come in with red-faced due to the heat, I asked her how she got to the school. That's when I learned she walks. It takes her 20-30 minutes to get there. She never missed an afternoon of school, even in the extreme temperatures. She is faithful to participate on Burlington English, as well. I expect her to make huge improvements in her English.

Alejandro Carrillo

Last year, when Alejandro started in the HSD program, his work and family situation kept him from accomplishing his goal to complete credits to graduate and move forward in his career. This school year is different. He created the space in his life to focus on his credits and has recently completed them to graduate – within the first month and a half of the school year! He is interested in pursuing Electrical certification to enhance his construction skills. He plans to meet with our Navigators as a resource for career guidance, and look into Visalia Adult School’s Electrical certification program.

The program I was in, High School Diploma, consisted of using the credits that I had accumulated in high school and determining what I would need to graduate at Visalia Adult. The classes I completed in high school helped me a-lot, it got me closer to finishing my diploma at Visalia Adult. I found out about VAS through my wife. I enjoyed how the HSD program is setup. The program worked with adult students and gave me a choice between working at home or coming in to class. Over all I enjoyed my teacher. She really help me push myself to finishing my diploma. She helped me in many ways when there was a hard problem. Thank you Ms. Ginger Allen!
My goals are to make sure I keep putting my son first and show him that no matter what situation you are in, will-power is all you need to succeed . The people that have had the greatest impact on shaping who I am today would be my son and my mother. What I value most is my family; Family comes first.

Alex has had the chance to explore a whole new aspect of nursing. He has a fantastic skillset working with elderly adults, but now he is experiencing Maternal Child Health clinical rotation and it is so wonderful to see him learning about the opposite end of the spectrum. He lights up when sharing new experiences. It is great to watch him make connections between theory and actually caring for these patients in the MCH rotation. Alex is always excited to learn and is an active participant in class as well as clinical. He has a true and genuine care for all people and will always strive to give the best care to his patients. Alex will be that wonderful nurse that treats everyone like family!

Elvira is a wonderful student who flies just under the radar, but should not go unnoticed! She needs a spotlight because she is excelling throughout this program. Elvira has a mild mannered quiet demeanor, but she is diligent and always on task. Her patient care clinical experience is filled with compassion for her patients and a drive for continual learning. Elvira is a delight and will be a wonderful nurse!

Hello, my name is Elvira Ramos Tapia, I am currently in the VN program. I first heard about the program about 2-3 years ago from one of my co-workers. We talked about how it was an accelerated program and it was economical. That pushed me to look into the requirements and applied since I was looking into furthering my education. What I most enjoy about this program is gaining new knowledge and that I am able to learn in a classroom and learn at the clinical sites (out of class). I also enjoy the different teaching styles. I wish to complete the VN program, pass the NCLEX exam, and start working to utilize my new acquired skills. My parents have greatly impacted my life and have taught me how it is important to be responsible , hardworking, and to follow my goals even though there may be many obstacles to overcome. Advice to future VAS students is to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. Change can be different and intimidating but it helps you grow and opens for new opportunities.

Ricardo Barriga- Martinez

Ricardo came into the Adult Basic Education Program feeling unsure about being back in school and unsure of his academic skills, but he has really shined as an outstanding student. Ricardo studies consistently and with effort, always redoing Drills and Tests until he has a passing score. He works his way through the academic curriculum and is messaging his teacher several times a week to unlock new content. So far, in his record week, he logged 32 hours and 44 minutes of study time. If Ricardo continues to apply himself to his studies as he has done recently... he will go far...

I found out about Visalia Adult School because my Mom is also a student at this school. What I enjoy the most about my program is the learning and being able to participate in my education. My goals after I complete my adult basic education and GED program is to get a decent job as a mechanic. The person that has impacted me the most in my life is my mom, she continues to be my greatest support and pushes me to continue studying. If I could say anything to people considering attending Visalia Adult School, I would tell them to go here. It is a good opportunity for them to study, and to achieve their goals. If I can do it, you can too!

I am currently in the Medical Assistant program here at the Visalia Adult School. I chose this school because it was the most reasonable in cost. I have a diverse class which makes it pretty cool. I like that we have a balance between class work and home life. We rarely take school work home with us. I hope that this is a stepping stone towards the LVN program for me. I would consider my spirit animal to be the bald eagle full of strength and to soar above any obstacles.

In many ways exceeding the challenging requirements and expectations for the Medical Assisting Program, Melanie's ambitions, intelligence, and accomplishments compliment precisely and make her highly deserving of this student spotlight. Her skills do not end in the classroom. She also projects a warm and loving attitude at home. She cares for her mother who battles dementia. I have seen her handle resolve conflicts and handle other difficult situations with remarkable patience and admirable tact. She loves people, works hard, and always tries to lift the spirits of those around her. I believe these characteristics represent all that is good at Visalia Adult School, and I am pleased to nominate her for the honor of October Student Spotlight.

Alicia Rodriguez
CTE- Medical Assistant

Congratulatory Message
Student is enrolled in medical assistant program while working in a packing warehouse late hours of the night. I saw a social media post of her doing her homework in the middle of some packing pallets while in break, that really amazed me.
Administrative Assistant, Leticia Elias
Alicia is an example of what determination and perseverance looks like. While working a graveyard shift, where she gets off at 7am, she manages to be one of the first students through the door at 8am. She has near perfect attendance. She knows that if she continues to push herself it will all make sense and help for a better future. She owes her strength to the memory of her grandmother who recently passed. She made it, Grandma, she is almost there!
Instructor, Marixssa Martinez
What I enjoy most about the CTE- Medical Assistant program is that it helps me challenge myself in so many different ways everyday. I have learned and grown so much since starting. My goals after completing the program is to put to use all the skills I have learned by seeking employment, and hopefully becoming a certified medical assistant. I would consider a butterfly my spirit animal because many people believe that they signify power of transformation and the incredible feats we can achieve when we trust ourselves. My father and mother have had the greatest impact on shaping me on who I am today; My big sister and my little brother included. My family are my rock and support system. I could never thank them enough for all that they do for me. My family is my biggest value. My parents, my sister, my brother, my only neice, and my four nephews. I would suggest if you are thinking of attending the VAS, do it! Do it!!! You will not regret it! It’s very convenient financially compared to most schools. You can get things done in a timely manner, and all the staff is incredible! I’am so thankful for the experience and I can not wait to return to continue in their VN program!

Timothy Jewett
Adult Basic Education
I am currently in the Adult Basic Education Program at Visalia Adult School. I only have a few lessons left in this program before I finish it. I came to Visalia Adult School because I wanted to get my life back on track. I enjoy this program because it helps me stay on track and finish my assignments on time. After I finish this program, I am hoping to get a better job that can increase my wages.
I am most thankful for my grandma. She has helped and pushed me to be the best that I can be. She has had the greatest impact on who I am today. My values in my life are my family. I value my family most.
For anyone that is thinking about Visalia Adult School but might be hesitating, just do it. No matter what anyone says just do you.
Student, Timothy Jewett
Timothy enrolled in ABE in August and has made wonderful progress in his studies since then. He has clear goals for himself which helps fuel his motivation and drive to learn. Despite his other obligations and commitments, he consistently communicates and shows success in the understanding and mastery of difficult skills. Part of that success includes planning and preparing his daily goals and action plans, and believing in himself.

Josefina Campos

I am in the ESL Intermediate class and Office Skills. I also did the Citizenship class in the Fall and am now a Citizen. I found the classes because of teacher Mary Gonzales, Cary Kalfayan and Sarah Motola would visit my job at Taqueria Don Taco and would tell me to enroll in the classes.
I enjoy that I am able to communicate in English better and understand a lot more. I especially enjoy learning! My spirit animal is an eagle so I can fly higher every day with my strength. My children have shaped me the most. I am a single mother and they have helped me find the strength within myself.
I value learning. Learning something new everyday and trying to be as positive to others as much as possible is important to me. If you're thinking about starting a program with VAS, do it and don't even think about it twice. Everyone is here to help you achieve your goals and create a better future for you and your family! What I plan to do next is, go to college! I am not sure what I plan to study yet but I want to open all the doors I can for more opportunities that presents itself.

Congratulatory Message
Josefina Campos, was nominated by all four of her current teachers. Instrory, Judy Moxley states “This year I have seen such a huge growth in determination and persistence that has allowed Josefina to accomplish so much more than before”. While managing a part-time job, Josefina has been in 3 different classes at one time, ESL, Citizenship, and Office Skills. Josefina figured out her barriers, overcame them and purposed to be successful. In ESL, her CASAS scores have been consistently on the rise for reading and listening. She rarely misses class, is attentive, and eager to participate. Her classmates often go to her for assistance, which she is always willing to give, along with her infectious smile.
Citizenship Instructor, Cary Kalfayan shared “Josefina showed persistence and high interest in learning what it takes to become a United States citizen over the last year, this determination and commitment paid off. On February 1, Josefina passed her citizenship test and took the oath soon after! Congratulations Josefina Campos a new United States citizen and one of Visalia Adult School’s outstanding students!
Briana Vargas
High School Diploma
I was enrolled in the High School Diploma program at Visalia Adult School. I came to find it while scrolling on Facebook. I eventually did some more research about the programs at Visalia Adult School and saw that they have more than High School Diploma programs for students. I enjoyed the HSD program because it allowed me to complete the school work at the pace of my own while still requiring that we checked in weekly for a minimum amount of hours. My teacher, Ginger Allen was very positive and wonderful too. The person who has had the greatest impact on shaping who I have become is my son. For once in my life, I have motivation. He motivates me to continue and provides me purpose in my life.
Student, Briana Vargas

Congratulatory Message
Since Briana began working toward completing her HSD requirements in Fall of 2020, she gave birth to a little boy she adores. Even though life since then has brought challenges, including being a single mother, she has never stopped working persistently to achieve her goal of graduating. As of 2/15/23: She has completed 76 credits and only needs 3 more to earn her diploma.
Briana says: “There have been times I felt like I would never reach my goal. I just wanted to give up, but I kept pushing myself - for my son and for myself. I knew I would get there. And I did!”
After graduation, Briana plans to pursue a career in Medical Billing and Coding. We know a great school where she can get that training! Update: Since the publishing of this website, she has since completed her high school diploma. Congratulations to you Briana!

Fany A. Alvarez
Certified Nurse Assistant
Congratulatory Message
Fany Alvarez has been in my evening CNA program that started January 17th and will end on May 11th, 2023. Fany's first language is Spanish and English as her second language. She received her GED in December of 2022 from the Visalia Adult School. In January 2023 she started the CNA program.
Fany plans on taking Medical Terminology next and then applying at the Visalia Adult School for the VN Program. This student has a wonderful family which fully supports her dream of becoming a nurse. I am honored to have such a wonderful student in my class. Her determination, perseverance, strength, and moral values serve as a positive example and role model for her classmates and anyone else she may come into contact with. This student is caring, demonstrates kindness towards her classmates, staff at the clinical site and towards her patients that she provides care for.
This student has worked hard to learn how to speak, read and write a second language. She has been going to school and raising her family while continuing her education so that she may better her life as well as her family's. This student has had challenges in life as she has raised her family and pursued her educational dreams, but she did not let those chalIenges stop her. I would like to recognize Fany A. Alvarez for her outstanding achievements and accomplishments in pursue of her education.

Diana Lopez Ramos
English as a Seond Language
Good day! My name is Diana Lopez Ramos. Thank you very much for taking me into account in this nomination, I feel very happy!
Upon arriving in this country and not understanding the language, I felt the need to learn English in order to communicate with other people and to help my children. I was asking and searching the Internet and I found Visalia Adult School. What I enjoy the most is meeting people from other places and it doesn't matter where we are from, we all have a common purpose which is to learn the English language, prepare ourselves and get ahead.
The greatest impact for me is my family, thanks to their support I continue preparing myself, because they are my greatest motivation and because of them I want to be better every day. My values are honesty, responsibility, sensitivity and gratitude. My advice to other people who are thinking about attending VAS is that they stop thinking about it and encourage themselves to prepare to find better opportunities and thus improve their quality of life, because the key to success is education and it is never too late for a start. Thank you VAS for welcoming me with open arms and giving me the opportunity to learn every day and be part of your students.
Student, Diana Lopez Ramos

Congratulatory Message
Diana has been a faithful and committed student since she began in August. She has improved her English so much in every category. A couple of months ago, she also took on getting her GED in Spanish. She is also a wife and mother of 2. Due to some recent challenges at home, it has been necessary for Diana to miss a day of school every week. But that doesn't deter her from her commitment to being an excellent student. She always asks what the homework is or what we will be working on that day. She returns ready as though she'd never missed the day. She is a respected and trusted helper to her peers and does so with joy and encouragement. She is ready for the next level of English. When she finishes her GED, which will be soon, she will advance. It has been a wonderful pleasure to have Diana as a student and know her as a person, as well!

Annie Garcia
Medical Billing & Coding

Congratulatory Message
Annie has come out of the cocoon and has learned we are all unique, but together we build an amazing team! She mentioned this was a bit complicated as there were times she felt returning home from the parking lot. There were days she was unsure this was her way but knew this was her place. Making connections with her peers have been of motivation.
Instructor, Laura Jacinto
I am in the medical billing and coding class. I found other places but came upon finding Visalia Adult School and enrolled initially in Office Skills and Business classes. After meeting the prerequisite for the placement test, I was able to finally enroll this semester. My teacher, Laura is a good teacher. The class is not easy but I worked really hard on not giving up; it's fast paced. There is a lot to learn and to retain. But this is something I have wanted to do, it has challenged me but I set my mind to it.
What I enjoyed most about this program is that I now understand it. I can see and understand the steps to solving the codes. My teacher is very knowledgeable. She communicates with me and I enjoy the class. I ask a lot of questions and my teacher is opened to providing me with answers. When I first enrolled in this class, I had ideas about what it would be all about but now that I am actually in it, I enjoy it so much more than I imagined. I learn different from others and it is a passion of mine to help others to learn too. Let me know if you need help, and I can help you learn this class. Don’t be scared or shy to ask for help, whether it’s in this class or in any other area of your life.
I value respect, honesty, and sincerity. But most importantly, I value respect. Communication is important to me and people often think that this means that I should like to talk a lot. But the truth is, Listening is most important in communication. I do not judge people by how they look, I hope others will not judge me that way as well. It’s so important that we get to know each other more than just what we see from one another. I value sincerity.
The greatest impact on shaping who I am today are my kids. My kids have helped to shape and mold me. I thought that as a parent, I was supposed to shape them to be better but they’ve done this for me. … they helped shape me to be a better version of myself every day. I am so thankful and grateful for my kids. I am blessed to be their mother every day.
Student, Annie Garcia
Maru (Maria Eugenia) Campos
Thank you very much for this recognition. I feel very happy and very proud of myself for all that I have improved in my English. Thank you very much to this school, to my teacher Sarah for her help and especially to my parents and my baby who always support me and encourage me to be better every day.
I found out about this program through my mother, she loves learning English and a few years ago she was studying here. This is a great opportunity to learn and improve our English. I think that we can find better job and life opportunities if we speak English well. I enjoy learning new things every day. I like coming to class and interacting with the teacher Sarah and with my classmates, we always try to express ourselves in English. And also, at home I love listening to stories in Burlington English readers and doing different exercises, this application has helped me a lot.
If I were to be a spirit animal, I somewhat identify with a golden eagle and a black panther. Both are large, strong and powerful animals. The eagle is majestic in its flight, it gives us hope and freedom. The black panther helps us not to fear the night and the dark. l am strong, powerful and noble. I like the dark, that's where the stars shine (one day everyone in the dark sky will shine like stars).
My parents have always been my inspiration and my best example of work, responsibility and love. No matter if it rains, if it is cold or if they are sick. They always do their responsibilities, they have always taken care of all their children and they have pushed us to be successful and have a happy life. I respect the thoughts and beliefs of others. Giving love and helping others is giving them the best gift. Be responsible and be a good person. These are values that my parents taught me and I try to practice them at all times.
The best advice I would give to others thinking about attending VAS is to enjoy your class. Organize your schedule and be disciplined and constant. Every day I attend classes and speak and listen in English all the time. This will help them improve and see the results very soon. I plan to continue improving my English. I am going to COS to enroll in English classes. Then I would like to study to be a translator and find a job that allows me to match my work schedule with the responsibilities of being a mother.
Student, Maru Campos
English as a Second Language & Spanish GED

Congratulatory Message
Maru worked SO hard to study for and pass GED math! She worked at home, school, and even through lunch studying math on Aztec, videos, etc.! She also joined Teacher Lauren Haley’s ABE math class for a time. She is a hard worker and never gave up. This is in addition to studying English in the advanced level class as well as adding the Office Skills class this semester. She worked hard all year to balance studying for GED, ESL, and now Office Skills. She did all this while caring for her elderly parents and her 3 year-old daughter at home. I’m so proud of all she has accomplished this year! While working to achieve her goals and while working through her barriers in math, she has maintained a positive attitude and consistently encourages her classmates, always offering positive words of encouragement, especially to her fellow Spanish GED students. Thank you, Maru, for being a positive force in our ESL and Spanish GED classes!

Yesenia Ortiz
High School Diploma
The program I was in was High School Diploma, I heard about this program back when I was attending Sequoia High School after I had my first child. I didn't finish school due to having my first child. VAS helped me explore my options if I ever wanted to come back and get my diploma or GED.
What I have enjoyed the most at the Visalia Adult School is my teacher, Tiffany. She is very understanding and has been helpful during my online school time. And, when I have needed help or didn’t understand something my teacher has always been there to clarify the things that I did not understand.
What has had the greatest impact on shaping who I am today is my daughters and my self-motivation. For me, education means I can go to college and better my life for me and my kids while also leading by example. My next step from here is to find employment while hopefully soon attending college to study in the medical field.
Student, Yesenia Ortiz

Congratulatory Message
Yesenia started the High School Diploma program on February 9, 2023, needing 23 credits. She worked in Edgenuity day and night putting in thirty hours most weeks and in one week, 65 hours. She was on a mission to graduate this Spring along with her boyfriend who is completing the VAS GED program at Proteus. She is the mother of two girls, and it was important to Yesenia to show her girls that it is possible to meet goals and achieve your dreams. Even when discouraged, Yesenia kept working with a laser focus, pulling herself back together when things were hard and digging in her heels to get the job done.

Ashley Trejo
Certified Nurse Assistant

Congratulatory Message
Ashley Trejo has been in my evening CNA program that started in January 2023 and will be done in May 2023. This student has 3 young children, an outside job and school. Her dream of obtaining a career in the medical field is what she is striving for. Ashley is soft spoken, of a quiet nature, intelligent, innovative and creative. She has done excellent academically in the Theory portion of the program and doing just as well in clinicals. Her bedside manner with the patients defines as patient, kind, loving, respectful and has a heart of gold. Ashley takes pride in her work. This student shows ultimate respect towards her peers as well as her instructor.
Ashley is an inspiration in spite of her struggles at raising her 3 young children, the CNA program and an outside job. This student comes to class with positivity and an eagerness to learn and succeed. Her commitment to her academics is commendable. Ashley shines as an outstanding student and therefore I would like to recognize her for the May Spotlight for the Visalia Adult School.

When I became interested in being a nursing assistant I looked at all my options and chose VAS because they offered an evening part time class that worked perfectly with my schedule. With working and having kids that’s hard to find and VAS made it possible.
My children have the biggest impact on shaping who I am today. Being able to care for them and watch them grow has brought out a nurturing part of me I never knew I had. They have made me want to do better for myself, which in the long run would help me do better for them. My kids have taught me how to be a protector, a loving and caring person, they make me strive to continually be an overall better version of myself daily. Their impact has molded me into the person I am, and the person I intend to become.
My core values will always be Integrity, Respect, Compassion and Responsibility. If I had to give any advice to someone considering attending VAS I would tell them to just go for it. There will never be a down side to learning and expanding your knowledge. If someone wants to learn or dip into a career path, just do it. Pay attention, work hard, give it your all. If you are serious about learning, it will come naturally, you will find an interest in it if you are serious. There will be times you might doubt yourself, but keep pushing, the outcome will be worth it, you have nothing to lose, if in the long run it doesn’t work out, you have done nothing but realized it maybe wasn’t for you, and you have undoubtedly gained some more knowledge.
I plan to continue my education and training and hope to find a path that will eventually lead me to a career as a registered nurse. I hope to continue learning and succeed in a career where I genuinely enjoy doing what I get paid to do, where I get to help people. It will be a path that will lead me to financial stability, a career that will allow me to provide for my family, help my community, and inspire those around me, I plan to succeed.

Perla Carmona
I am so happy to be enrolled in the CNA program because I have the chance to impact other people's life based on the care I provide. I enjoy helping others and making a positive difference in their life. I found out about VAS Online. I was looking for a program that could adapt to my busy schedule, and I got lucky that VAS offered evening classes.
What I love about the program is to have the most dedicated instructor I ever met. Mrs. Mary Silva is so talented at explaining difficult topics and I enjoyed every minute of her lectures. She is the sweetest and kindest person I ever met. I truly appreciate the time she spent helping me on many occasions. My gratitude for all her support, I will never forget.
My animal spirit is an owl because I considered myself a peaceful and quiet person. I love to observe, reflect and become a little wiser every day. I am so focused on my family and not many see me around often.
The person I am today is thanks to my parents. They gave me all their love , effort and guidance. They taught me that when we give respect, we earn respect. They also taught me to never forget where I came from and to always follow my dreams no matter the circumstances; that a person with no goals is a person with no future.
I am a very honest, loyal, intelligent, perseverance and compassionate person. Those values are the ones that guide me throughout my daily life.
I would tell anyone thinking about attending Visalia Adult School that no matter what they are facing today, it is never too late to make their dreams come true. Many people stop pursuing their dreams because they believe it is too late or they’re too old. But the truth is that we are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. My next step is to get enrolled in the LVN program here at VAS because this institution is one of the best!

Congratulatory Message
Perla Carmona began my evening CNA program in January 2023 and will be completed in May of 2023. Perla has shared with me her wish to become a nurse someday. She is currently in the CNA program and taking a couple of classes on line in preparation for her nursing career. Her children vary in age between teenagers and a young toddler.
Perla's first language was Spanish and this young lady has worked hard to master the English language which we all know is not easy to do. Despite the struggles of life, raising a family and trying to get an education, Perla always comes to class greeting her peers, and teacher with a smile on her face and the willingness to learn and succeed. She tackles issues and challenges with a can-do-attitude. Perla is attentive, studies hard, eager to learn, has persistence and determination. She has a huge heart for the elderly at our clinical site, provides exceptional care and will one day be a nurse I would allow to care for me.
For these qualities I would like to recognize Perla Carmona for the April Spotlight for Visalia Adult School.
