I stay focused by setting small daily goals, taking things one day at a time instead of overwhelming myself with everything that needs to be done, and remembering my “why,” my son. 

My goals are to finish my Vocational Nursing program, continue on to become an Registered Nurse, and build financial stability for my family. I am currently in the last term of my Vocational Nursing program at Visalia Adult School, expected to finish in June 2026. As a first-generation student, I feel beyond blessed and overwhelmed with emotion to have come this far, knowing how much this journey means for my family and our future.

One of my lowest points during the program was being a first time mom freshly postpartum and struggling with PPD. I struggled with whether I should take time off to be with my newborn son and not miss his first-year milestones or continue school. After a lot of reflection, I decided it was best for us that I continue my education. Now, my son will turn one this May, and I will also be finishing school at the same time.

Someone who continues to inspire and support me is my husband. He has been my biggest supporter throughout this entire program, and without him, I truly don’t think I would have been able to do it. He has constantly reassured me that everything is God’s timing, and his encouragement has helped me keep going even in my hardest moments.

I attended Visalia Adult School where I completed the Vocational Nursing program and worked hard to build a better future for myself and my family. The program challenged me to stay focused, disciplined, and confident in my abilities, even during stressful moments. Since graduating, I have been able to grow in my nursing career by working in healthcare facilities that allow me to care for others, gain experience, and continue learning every day. Becoming a nurse has been one of my biggest accomplishments and has opened doors for stability, growth, and opportunities I once only hoped for.

My “why” has always been my family, my daughter, and the life I want to create for us. Staying motivated comes from wanting to continue growing personally and professionally while proving to myself that hard work truly pays off. There were moments where things felt overwhelming, but I learned that consistency and determination matter more than perfection.

To any student feeling stuck or discouraged, I would say: don’t give up on yourself just because the journey feels hard. Everyone struggles at some point, but growth happens when you keep showing up anyway. Ask questions, lean on your support system, and remember that temporary challenges do not define your future.

The teachers and staff at Visalia Adult School played a huge role in helping me succeed. They were supportive, encouraging, and genuinely cared about helping students reach their goals. The guidance, resources, and encouragement I received gave me the confidence to push forward and believe that I was capable of achieving my dreams.
